After a long and bitter dispute over whether Sydney or Melbourne should be the national capital of Australia, a compromise was reached to build a new capital between the two cities. The project was completed in 1908 when Canberra replaced Melbourne as the capital of Australia. Located approximately 300 kilometers southwest of Sydney and 650 kilometers northeast of Melbourne, Canberra is the largest inland city in Australia.
