Aristophanes is the only writer of "Old Comedy" whose works are still extant today. Lost forever are the plays of his contemporaries, among them Chionides, Magnes, Cratinus, Crates, and Eupolis. Fortunately for us, Aristophanes was, by most accounts, considered the greatest comic writer of his day. He wrote approximately forty plays during his career and eleven of them have survived to this day.
