According to the 2004 British Trust for Ornithology survey, the wood pigeon was the most commonly seen bird in the UK. The chaffinch came in second, followed by the blackbird (third) and the wren (fourth). This annual survey involves 2,000 BTO volunteers who go out at dawn to count the UK's birds.
