The city of Miramar was incorporated May 26, 1955. At the time of incorporation, it had a population of less than 200 people.

Although Miramar is Spanish for "look at the sea", the Florida city is not located on the ocean. It was named for the Miramar area of Havana, Cuba where city founder A.L. Mailman had a summer home.

The city seal is emblazoned with two palm trees and inscribed with the motto "Beauty and Progress".

Moonlight (2016) won the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, who plays a drug dealer who becomes a father figure to Chiron, the film's protagonist who endures difficulties growing up. The school where Chiron finally snaps after taking years of abuse is Miramar High School.

In 1991 archeological excavations unearthed artifacts establishing Snake Warrior's Island as the former home of Chief Chitto Tustenugee or "Snake Warrior" and his tribe. Old legends say that other Native Americans wouldn't set foot in the area during the 1800s, and locals tell stories of eerie beams of light that still come from the island.

Johnny Depp's family moved frequently during his childhood but eventually settled in Miramar, Florida in 1970. He dropped out of Miramar High School age 16 to become a rock star. He tried to return to school two weeks later, but the principal told him to follow his dreams.

Caribbean Culture Fest is an annual 2-Day celebration of Caribbean Culture that takes place in the city of Miramar. Artists from all over the Caribbean hit the stage to give the audience a taste of Soca, Reggae, Dance Hall, Zouk, Salsa and Kompa.

Miramar is the 3rd largest city in Broward County in terms of land size and the 5th largest city in Broward in terms of population.
