Hepburn's portrayal of Holly Golightly as the naïve, eccentric café society girl is generally considered to be one of the actress's most memorable roles.

Early on a fall morning, a lone taxicab deposits Holly at Tiffany's jewelry store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Holly eats a breakfast pastry and drinks coffee while admiring the window displays, then strolls home.

At her brownstone apartment, Holly successfully fends off her date from the night before, who has been waiting in his car outside her residence all night and is angry that she disappeared after "going to the powder room."

HOLLY: Any chic gentleman will give a girl $50 for the powder room ... and cab fare, that's another 50.

"Cat" is more or less a stray who has adopted Holly as his own. Unfortunately Holly really can't (or won't) develop any sort of emotional attachment to anything or anyone. She won't even give Cat an actual name. He simply remains "Cat".

After meeting her new neighbor, Paul Varjak, she insists on calling him Fred because he looks like her brother Fred who is in the army.

Holly is introduced to Paul's "decorator", Emily Eustace Failenson, whom Paul nicknames "Tooley". That night, when Holly goes out onto the fire escape to elude an over-eager date, she peeks into Paul's apartment and sees Tooley leaving money and kissing him goodbye.

Salvatore "Sally" Tomato is a mob boss incarcerated at Sing Sing prison on racketeering charges.

Tomato's lawyer pays her $100 a week to deliver "the weather report". Holly doesn't seem to realize that she is passing coded messages for Sally's drug ring.

Paul has published a book of stories and claims to be working on a novel, but Holly notices there is no ribbon in his typewriter--so she buys him one.
