He severely injures his hands in a car crash, leaving him unable to operate. His former lover and co-worker Christine Palmer tries to help him move on, but Strange pushes her away.

After Western medicine fails him, Strange embarks on a journey that leads him to Kamar-Taj, home and training grounds to the Masters of the Mystic Arts.

Cornered in an alley by three thugs who want his watch, Strange tries to defend himself, but he is badly beaten until Karl Mordo comes to the rescue.

The Ancient One is the Sorcerer Supreme as well as the leader of the Masters of the Mystic Arts. For centuries, she has protected Earth from mystical threats and dedicated herself to helping others in need by educating them in the magical arts.

The Ancient One shows Strange her power, revealing the Astral Plane, which coexists alongside the Material Plane. Strange begs her to teach him, and she eventually agrees despite his arrogance, which reminds her of Kaecilius.

The card reads: SHAMBALLA. "What's this?" Strange asks. "My mantra?" "Your wifi password," Mordo replies. "We're not savages."

It is engraved with the message: "Time will tell how much I love you. ~Christine"
