Sebastian is tasked by King Triton to follow Ariel and keep her out of trouble, and so witnesses Ariel saving Eric from drowning, which horrifies him as contact between the human world and merworld is forbidden.

Ariel signs a contract with Ursula that allows her to become human for three days, but if she doesn't make the prince kiss her before sundown of the third day, she will belong to the sea witch forever.
