The Deus Ex Machina is the central interface and ruling leader of Machine City. "Deus Ex Machina" means "god from a machine" and is a contrived plot device where an unexpected power or event saves a seemingly hopeless situation.
Neo convinces the Deus that the rogue Smith is a virus that wants to conquer both the Matrix and the real world. In the Matrix, Smith assimilates Neo and the Deus sends a surge of energy into Neo's body in the real world, causing the Neo/Smith clone and all the other Smith clones in the Matrix to be destroyed, deleting Agent Smith permanently.
The Matrix Revolutions ends with a tentative peace established between the humans and the machines. When asked by the Architect whether or not the peace will last, the Oracle responds "for as long as it can".
