KANGAROO TRIVIA II

11) How do kangaroos fight?

If threatened, kangaroos will pound the ground with their strong feet to warn others in the group. When they fight, they punch, kick, grapple, and sometimes even bite.

12) Which carnivore preys on kangaroos?

Dingoes typically hunt large kangaroos by chasing them toward their pack mates.

13) What is a kangaroo's pouch called?

Like most marsupials, female kangaroos have a pouch called a marsupium in which joeys complete postnatal development.

14) How many joeys does a female kangaroo give birth to at a time?

Kangaroos carry only one joey per pregnancy. However, they are able to suckle two joeys simultaneously--one in the pouch and one outside--as their litters sometimes overlap.

15) What term is an informal designation for any macropod that is smaller than a kangaroo?

Wallabies are widely distributed across Australia, particularly in more remote, heavily timbered, or rugged areas, less so on the great semi-arid plains that are better suited to the larger, leaner, and more fleet-footed kangaroos.

16) In the 1990s, a plague spread through the kangaroo population causing ________.

The first official report of kangaroo blindness took place in 1994, in central New South Wales. The following year, reports of blind kangaroos appeared in Victoria and South Australia. By 1996, the disease had spread to Western Australia. Researchers at the Australian Animal Health Laboratories in Geelong eventually detected the Wallal virus in two species of midges, believed to have been the carriers. Veterinarians also discovered fewer than 3% of kangaroos exposed to the virus developed blindness.
