After many childless years, King Stefan and Queen Leah happily welcome the birth of their daughter, Princess Aurora.

Her pet raven Diablo is the only thing Maleficent genuinely cares about. She is visibly shaken when she finds him turned to stone.

Flora and Fauna give their gifts of beauty and song, but before Merryweather is able to give her blessing, the evil witch Maleficent appears.

The evil witch curses the princess, proclaiming that Aurora will grow in grace and beauty, but on her sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.

The three fairies raise Aurora in a secluded cottage under the alias Briar Rose.

MALEFICENT: Well, quite a glittering assemblage, King Stefan. Royalty, nobility, the gentry, and ... [sees the three good fairies and laughs] oh, how quaint -- even the rabble.

The Forbidden Mountain is a range of mountains with a ruined castle at its peak that serves as Maleficent's home.

Fauna bakes Aurora a 16-layer birthday cake for her 16th birthday, but can't manage to keep it upright!

Merryweather uses her blessing to weaken the curse so that instead of dying, Aurora will fall into a deep sleep from which she can only be awakened by true love's first kiss.

FAUNA: Maleficent doesn't know anything about love or kindness or the joy of helping others. You know, sometimes I don't think she's really very happy.
