The film is loosely based on the German fairy tale "Rapunzel" published by the Brothers Grimm.

The Stabbington Brothers are first seen with Flynn Ryder, heading for Corona Castle to steal a royal crown that belongs to the missing princess.

Mother Gothel kidnaps the infant Rapunzel, imprisoning her in an isolated tower for eighteen years while posing as her mother in order to exploit her magical powers.

Once a year, the King and Queen release sky lanterns on Rapunzel's birthday, hoping for their daughter to see them and return.
