In 1970, Chain Reaction and Jam Band played at the same gig. Tyler, who had been a drummer and backup singer in Chain Reaction, immediately loved Jam Band's sound and wanted to combine the two bands, but adamantly refused to play drums in this new band, insisting that he would take part only if he could be frontman and lead vocalist. The others agreed, and Aerosmith was born.

They were nicknamed the Toxic Twins in the 1970s due to their rampant use of drugs both on and off stage, which was a "toxic" combination that almost ended their careers and their lives. To this day, they are still commonly referred to by this nickname, despite getting clean and maintaining sobriety for most of the past 30 years.

The term "Blue Army" was coined by the band around 1975. "Blue" referred to the blue denim jeans and jean jackets as well as the blue collar demographic of their fans. "Army" referred to their loyalty, youthfulness, and tough demeanor.

Steven Tyler was born Steven Tallarico. When he was in the band Chain Reaction, he became Steven Tally. Then he formed Aerosmith and wanted to change his name to Tyler Britt. But his manager convinced him to become Steven Tyler.

In the early 2010s, when Steven Tyler was about to join American Idol, the band found themselves drifting apart and briefly mulled the idea of replacing Tyler with Sammy Hagar.
