DIEHL: You have to go to Hemingford. It's about 19 miles down there.
BURT: What about Gatlin?
DIEHL: There ain't nothing in Gatlin.
BURT: What do you mean: "There ain't nothing in Gatlin"?
DIEHL: Folks in Gatlin got religious. They don't like outsiders.

Diehl's dog Sarge senses the children hiding in the cornfield. Malachi and the others kill Sarge and then ambush the elderly mechanic in his garage.

Isaac relates the prophecies of a demon called "He Who Walks Behind The Rows".

ISAAC: And He Who Walks Behind the Rows did say ... "I will send outlanders amongst you. A man and a woman. And these outlanders ... will be unbelievers and profaners of the holy."

BURT: Are your mommy and daddy around?
SARAH: They're in the corn field.
BURT: What are they doing there?
SARAH: All the grown ups are there.
BURT: Are they working there or having a meeting?
SARAH: No. Isaac put them there.

ISAAC: He's displeased with you, Malachi.
MALACHI: What have I done?
ISAAC: Question Him not in vain. Do you not know you sacrificed Joseph without an offering? And did you not spill the blood of the old man when his oil and gasoline were still useful to us?
MALACHI: We have our own fuel now from the corn.
ISAAC: Sow not your pride, Malachi. We have not enough.

When Vicky is kidnapped by Malachi and his group, they tie her to a cross in the cornfield and prepare to sacrifice her to He Who Walks Behind the Rows, chanting "KILL! KILL! KILL!"

AMOS: We go to Him the first night of our nineteenth year.
BURT: Who the hell is Him?
AMOS: He Who Walks Behind the Rows.

As the other children are hunting Burt, Job rescues him and hides him in a cellar.

Growing tired of Isaac, Malachi assumes command of the other children and orders Isaac to be sacrificed in Vicky's place, leaving him on the cross to be devoured by He Who Walks Behind The Rows.
